With tough times predicted for Canberra and concerns around job growth paramount in the lead up to the Federal election, innovation takes on a new importance. Tough times are often the catalyst that organisations need to enable innovation to take place. However, while everyone tells business to innovate, develop a disruptive mindset and embrace creativity and change when the going gets tough, nobody tells them how to do it.
Now in its fourth year, Start-Up Camp Canberra on the 14th-16th June is an intensive innovation and entrepreneurship workshop that takes place over a single weekend in which participants take an idea and transform it into a concept web business. On the Sunday teams have the opportunity to pitch their concept business to a panel of experts for feedback and possibly even funding.
“We recognise the important role that innovation plays in established businesses as well as start-ups,” said Anna Pino, CEO Lighthouse Business Innovation Centre.
“That’s why we are encouraging businesses of all sizes to join Start-Up Camp Canberra this year. There are a number of businesses in Canberra that are having a tough time at the moment as different factors force change in their industry."
“Start-up Camp is not only open to individuals, companies can also enter a team. It’s a great team-building exercise with the bonus of designing an innovative product that organisations can then commercialise. We are also encouraging not-for-profits to attend this year as they are also struggling with decreasing funding and need to come up with innovative ideas to remain sustainable,” said Ms Pino.
The program for Start-Up Camp includes innovative thinking workshops, an introduction to the Business Model Canvas and Lean start-up, talks by well-known innovators, mentoring and a wonderful collaborative atmosphere.
“If you love a bit of a challenge, consider yourself an ‘ideas person’ or maybe you’ve always thought you had a start-up in you somewhere – the weekend of the 14th June is your chance to immerse yourself in a world of problem-solving and idea generation at Start-Up Camp Canberra,” said Ms Pino.
